Capt. Jacob Fielstra, Marine Attack Squadron 214 pilot lands an AV-8B Harrier on Auxiliary Airfield 2 runway during aircraft carrier landing practice at the Barry M. Goldwater Range in Yuma, Ariz., March 25, 2010. The exercise is the first time the squadron has practiced carrier landings since their return from Afghanistan in November 2009. Pilots practiced for two days on the simulated ship deck. “Operations aboard ships are some of the most challenging things we do as pilots,” said British Royal Navy Lt. Duncan Telfer, squadron exchange pilot. Carrier landing training consists of flight simulator practice and landing in AUX-2, before qualifying at sea. “As part of readiness, it’s an important skill set to learn and maintain, and very perishable,” said Telfer.
