Cpl. Nick Wolff, Marine Combat Water Survival instructor, observes as Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron Marines tread water for the second portion of their initial level of swim qualification at the Oasis Pool at the Marine Corps Air Station in Yuma, Ariz., Jan. 28, 2010. Seventeen Marines braved the approximately 50 degree water to qualify for the initial level of swim qualification, which requires Marines to swim 25 meters in shallow water, perform water survival techniques for four minutes and then swim another 25 meters. Qualifications are usually held at Naval Air Facility El Centro, Calif., but have been held on station for approximately a month, due to the expense of transporting Marines there. “I don’t think the training is as realistic here,” said Wolff, referring to Oasis Pool’s lack of a high dive. “But you’ve got to do what you’ve go to do to get the mission accomplished.”
