The squadron fired four Sidewinder missiles at parachute flares off the coast of San Diego for air-to-air combat training that afternoon. Though the Harrier is primarily used for air-to-ground strikes, the squadron also trains with dummy missiles. This was, however, the first time the squadron has fired live missiles in more than two years. “Since air-to-air is one of our missions, it’s important to maintain proficiency,” said Capt. Eric Fong, one of the two squadron pilots to fire the missiles. “It’s one thing to train with a training weapon and another to actually employ the real weapon.”
