An F-35B Joint Strike Fighter descends to its first vertical landing March 18, 2010, at the Naval Air Station in Patuxent River, Md., confirming the future Marine Corps aircraft’s ability to land in confined areas. During the test, the plane, which is slated to replace all Marine Corps combat jets, rode 41,000 pounds of thrust from its single engine to land on the runway 150 feet below. Despite delays and budget overages within the JSF program, the Marine Corps is on track to reach an initial operating capability of 29 planes by December 2012.

The next day the station provost marshal’s office gave the group a tour of the base, which showed the Yuma veterans how much the air station has grown. “We had a 20-year reunion five years ago and that was a success,” said Oster, who hosted both reunions. “But the last one was held at my farm in Iowa. At that reunion, we decided to come back to Yuma, to the place where we all met.”

The array powers building 234, which is used by Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 13’s ground support equipment section. While the array does not produce enough electricity to completely power the building, it does significantly reduce the buildings power consumption from the station power grid.

Goldwater Range east of Yuma, Ariz., March 10, 2010. The cache consisted of six MK-83s and several thousand rounds of various small-caliber munitions, which had become unserviceable. The station explosive ordnance disposal team safely disposed of the ordnance in three separate blasts occurring one minute apart from one another. Detonating all of the ordnance at once would risk it being felt by the city of Yuma, approximately 5 miles away, said Gunnery Sgt. Michael Chapman, station EOD team leader.
