MARINE CORPS AIR STATION YUMA, Ariz. -- A new online curriculum replaced the Marine Corps Institute’s Leading Marines course, which junior Marines must complete for promotion to corporal.
The new Leading Marines program, available on MarineNet, expands the training into four courses, which adds five more lessons and 24 more topics than the previous course.
The curriculum was designed around four areas; developing leaders, military organization, leadership tools and the mentoring process.
Each course in the program is further broken down. Developing Leaders, the first course, covers topics such as understanding values, Marine Corps core values, Marine leadership traits, leadership principles, ethical leadership and operational culture. The second course, Leadership Tools, consists of team building and unit cohesion, war fighting and applying the troop leading steps.
The third course consists of counseling, coaching and mentoring. The fourth and final course includes lessons on command and military organization.
The courses may be taken in any order, each one leading up to a multiple choice online final that requires a proctor.
Leading Marines became mandatory for lance corporals to be promoted to corporals on Oct. 1, 2008. Lance corporals currently enrolled in the MCI can still be considered complete in professional military education for their grade, if they finish the MCI by Jan. 1, 2012.
"The old course was great," said James Corvin, spokesman for College of Distance Education and Training. "Changes were made to keep up with technology and the way young Marines are learning."
According to Marine Administrative Message 640/10, the course will develop and enhance Marines’ performance in current and future operational environments as well as their ability to think critically and make sound, ethical decisions.
