During their deployment to Afghanistan, Yuma’s Marine Wing Support Squadron 371 explosive ordnance disposal team aided several Marine and allied forces by disposing of improvised explosive devices throughout the Helmand Province. On May 26, 2009, one team member, Staff Sgt. Alonzo Smith, third from left, a 26-year-old native of Inglewood, Calif., was severely wounded when an IED detonated as he attempted to defuse it. Smith was treated by his teammates at the scene, and eventually flown to the National Naval Hospital in Bethesda, Md. The rest of the team returned to the Marine Corps Air Station in Yuma, Ariz., in early October 2009.
