Lance Cpl. Jace Freeman, a fire team leader with Company A, 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, fires his M-203 grenade launcher during a live-fire ambush and reaction drill at the Camp Billy Machen desert warfare training facility in the Chocolate Mountain Aerial Gunnery Range in California Oct. 18, 2009. The Camp Lejeune, N.C.-based company spent three days in California, making use of the camp’s rocky, mountainous terrain to prepare for an upcoming deployment to Afghanistan early next year. “As much as I hate this terrain, I’m glad we’re training on it,” said Freeman, 21, from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. “It’s difficult to maneuver on, but as we move through, it’s forcing us to work even more as a team, and it gives us an idea of what’s to come in Afghanistan.”
