Petty Officer 3rd Class Stephen C. Fruge, Navy corpsman, defends the perimeter of a landing zone while a CH-53 Super Stallion helicopter takes off during a noncombatant evacuation exercise Oct. 23, 2009, in Kiwanis Park in Yuma, Ariz. The exercise is a part of the Weapons and Tactics Instructors course held twice a year at the Marine Corps Air Station in Yuma, Ariz. The course, run by Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron 1, trains Marines from across the globe on the latest aviation tactics and techniques so they can then instruct members of their units. The city of Yuma allows the exercise to be held within city limits, which provides Marines with realistic training. Fruge, a 28-year-old native of Birmingham, Ala. is a member of Headquarters and Service Company, 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment. The battalion, based in Camp Lejeune, N.C., is training in Yuma for an upcoming deployment to Afghanistan.
