An F/A-18 Hornet with Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 251 from Beaufort, S.C., practices an emergency landing in order to test arresting gear on the flight line at the Marine Corps Air Station in Yuma, Ariz., Oct. 3, 2009. Emergency aircraft recovery Marines recently repaired the plane-stopping arresting gear on the flight line in July, and this was the first opportunity they had to test it. The gear is used to rapidly decelerate an aircraft in an emergency, stopping it within 900 feet.
