For the second time in the past three years the station’s air show was named Yuma’s best free event for 2009 in a poll taken by the Yuma Sun newspaper.

The 50th Yuma air show beat out more than 48 other events, including the Yuma County Fair and the downtown block party, which received second place and honorable mention in the free entertainment category.

In 2009, the air show featured the world record-breaking 10,178.3-foot-long and 150-foot-high Wall of Fire and attracted a crowd of approximately 37,000 spectators.

Voting for the contest was held Dec. 1-31, 2009.

“We don’t choose the winners, the community does,” said Adrianne Wagner, Yuma Sun marketing manager. “It’s a community vote. They look through the options we provide and if there’s one not listed that they want to vote for, they can write it in.”

The air show was also voted best free event in 2007, marking the first time it received the honor since the contest was started in 1998.

Headlining the station’s 2010 air show on March 27, 2010, is the Patriots Jet Team, a flight demonstration group that flies L-39 Albatross jets.
