MARINE CORPS AIR STATION YUMA, Ariz. --
The All-Marine golf and rugby teams are looking for players who have what it takes to be All-Marine.
Marines who are interested in competing on either team must submit applications to the station athletic director by Oct. 1. Applications must include a command endorsement stating that the Marine will be able to attend all the events if selected.
“In the individual sports like golf, we’re looking for talent,” said Walter Sosinski, station athletic director. “In the team sports, we’re looking for teamwork, as well as skill.”
The golf application must include proof of current U.S. Golf Association Handicap. However, a 3-stroke handicap or lower for men and 14 or lower for women is required. This information can be obtained from the station athletic director if the Marine plays at a club or keeps track of his scores, said Sosinski.
Golf championships are scheduled Oct. 28 through Nov. 4 at Camp Pendleton, Calif., with the top six men and three women proceeding to the Armed Forces Championships at Camp Pendleton Nov. 5-11. The top six men and two women from that championship will move on to represent the armed forces team at the Conseil International du Sport Militaire championships in Windhoek, Namibia, Africa, Nov. 15-20.
For Marines interested in rugby, the applications must include a preferred position, playing experience for the past four years, current club membership and a U.S. Rugby certified individual player number.
Marines who are accepted for the rugby team will train at Camp Lejeune, N.C., Nov. 1-8, prior to moving on to the Armed Forces Rugby Championship scheduled Nov. 9-15 at Fort Benning, Ga.
Both All-Marine teams are open to all active and reserve Marines who qualify.
Applications can be found at www.usmc-mccs.org/sports or at the local Semper Fit athletics office.
