Matthew Putesoy Sr., vice chairman of the Havasupai tribal council, welcomes Santa Claus and Marine reservists from the Phoenix-based Environmental Services Detachment after they landed in Supai, Ariz., to deliver Christmas gifts to the tribe's more than 100 children as part of the Toys for Tots program on Dec. 16, 2009. Besides airlift, the only way to reach the village is via an eight-mile foot trail. For 14 years, Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 764, a reserve unit based at Edwards Air Force Base north of Los Angeles, has flown donated toys to the village, nestled in a tributary canyon off the Grand Canyon's southern edge.
