U.S. Marine Corps photo by Gunnery Sgt. Bill Lisbon/Released 090107-M-0000G-000.jpg
Jan 7, 2009
Shortly after landing on Wake Island on Jan. 8, 2009, Marines from Marine Attack Squadron 211 get a firsthand look at the remote Pacific atoll's jagged coral beaches where waves of a Japanese invasion force landed in 1941 only to be met by fierce resistance by Marine defenders including some from Marine Fighter Squadron 211. The return of VMA-211 on Jan. 8 to the remote Pacific atoll marks the first time since May 1993 the bulk of the squadron, nicknamed the "Wake Island Avengers," has returned to its symbolic birthplace. VMA-211 is based in Yuma, Ariz. (Photo by Gunnery Sgt. Bill Lisbon)
