Approximately 700 Navy-Marine Corps Intranet users at Marine Corps Air Station Yuma are slated to receive new computers during “tech refresh” between Nov. 13 and Dec. 7 here.
Headquarters & Headquarters Squadron, Marine Wing Support Squadron 371, Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron 1, Marine Fighter Training Squadron 401 and Marine Corps Community Services will be receiving the new computers.
“During the tech refresh, NMCI users will be receiving new keyboards, mice and towers, but the monitors will not be replaced,” said Brenda Spicer, NMCI assistant customer technical representative.
Spicer said the new computers will be at least four times faster than the current models. She said the internet speed should remain relatively the same, however, programs that work with the internet should open quicker and help speed computer use.
MCCS and MWSS-371 computers are slated to be swapped Nov. 13-15, and H&HS, MAWTS-1 and VMFT-401 are slated to be exchanged Nov. 26 - Dec. 7.
“More laptops will be given, and certain users will now have administrator privileges to computers. Now (Universal Serial Bus) cards will be able to be used with all NMCI computers without making a phone call and waiting for a long time,” Spicer explained.
New keyboards will allow users to not have to waste time trying to get the common access card to read, she added.
There are things NMCI users can do to make the transition smooth and keep their own personal data from being deleted.
“In order for a user to not lose their files, they need to make sure what they want is saved in their user profiles, not the hard drive,” said Spicer.
She said users need to keep their email inboxes at a “reasonable” level in order to not lose any mail.
“For an average user, I would consider a reasonable level to be no more than 30 megabytes. That number includes all folders on the Outlook sidebar,” Spicer explained.
Outlook users would also need to save important emails as “pst.” files.
Spicer said unit information systems custodians need to be present at the weekly “tech refresh” meetings in order to pass along important information to their shops. Classes are held at 8:30 a.m. Thursday mornings in the Distance Learning Center.
All hands receiving new computers need to attend “tech refresh” meetings, held at the base theater. Meetings will be held Nov. 7-8 at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., as well as Nov. 13-14 at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
“The purpose of this training will be to give users as much information as possible for the “tech refresh.” You can find out how to save important emails in “stp.” format and get other tips to ensure no information is lost,” said Spicer.
Advanced notice will be given to shops for working on computers. Work will start after 4 p.m. in order to reduce impact on users.
During the time the computers are being replaced, it should take the NMCI service technicians about 15 minutes to transfer the user’s information, she said.
Users will not be able to call the NMCI help desk number for 72 hours following the transfer, Spicer said a team will arrive the day after the install to ensure proper function and other issues can be taken care of by station NMCI technicians until the NMCI help number is available.
“We received the current computers in August 2004, and it is time for them to go. I will do my all to assist a smooth transition to make it as easy as possible for our users,” said Spicer.
