Cpl. Sean Jenkins, right, and Lance Cpl. Markell Barnett, Marine Wing Support Squadron 371 drafting surveyors, checks the boundaries of the maintenance pad at Auxiliary Airfield 2 March 3, 2010. “We have to make sure the boundaries are perfectly square so the mats will fit in right,” said Jenkins. “If we don’t, it ends up all cockeyed and the mats don’t make a perfect surface.” The squadron began replacing matting in March to certify the airfield, which simulates the deck of a carrier ship, for another year of carrier landing training by aviation units. MWSS-371 is based at the Marine Corps Air Station in Yuma, Ariz. The auxiliary airfield is located on the Barry M. Goldwater Range east of the station.
