Sgt. Dustin Sholl, Marine Attack Squadron 311 powerline mechanic, changes a tire on an AV-8B Harrier at night on the flight deck of the USS Peleliu Feb. 8, 2010. The ship’s deck has a very rough texture that is designed to prevent skidding. “On it, tires wear twice as fast. It’s not uncommon to change tires often during ship operations,” said Sholl, who has deployed aboard ship twice. The squadron trained aboard the Peleliu for a week in order to obtain its aircraft carrier qualifications and prepare for its upcoming deployment with the 15th Marine Expeditionary in May. Approximately 10 pilots and 15 support and maintenance personnel participated in the exercise. The squadron practiced Harrier operations aboard the aircraft carrier from Feb. 8-11, including night flights, in preparation for the squadron’s upcoming deployment aboard the Peleliu.
