Lance Cpl. Matt P. Owens, rifleman and radio operator, watches for snipers in an urban training range in Twentynine Palms, Calif., on Oct. 10, 2009. The company's 1st Platoon flew from the Marine Corps Air Station in Yuma, Ariz, to Twentynine Palms, Calif., in order to raid a town and capture an insurgent leader, simulating a mission they could be called to perform during their next deployment. The battalion, based in Twentynine Palms, is scheduled to deploy with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit in early 2010, with E Company assigned to specialize in helicopter insertions and raids. Owens, 19, is a native of Bismark, Ill.
