2009 SNCO promotion board schedule announced

18 Mar 2008 | Gunnery Sgt. Bill Lisbon Marine Corps Air Station Yuma

The Marine Corps announced March 14 the schedule for staff noncommissioned officer promotion boards to be held in fiscal year 2009.

The board for E-8s and E-9s convenes first on Oct. 14 and expects to conclude on Dec. 12.

The gunnery sergeant promotion board begins April 14, 2009, and ends nine weeks later on June 12, 2009. Staff sergeant selections start July 14, 2009, wrapping up 10 weeks later on Sept. 18, 2009.

The selection board for all reserve staff NCOs convenes on Jan. 13, 2009, and adjourns on March 13, 2009.

Marines are personally responsible to ensure their Official Military Personnel Files and Master Brief Sheets for fitness reports are accurate and complete.

"Even though Marines are subject to an ever-increasing pace of deployments and operation commitments, they must understand that their obligation to prepare for promotion consideration still exists," stated Marine Administrative Message 178/08.

In 2007, Commandant Gen. James T. Conway rescinded a policy waiving professional military education requirements for staff NCOs established three years earlier because of the high number of deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan.

One exception, though, waived a resident course required for gunnery sergeants to be promoted to first sergeant. Whether or not the requirement will again be waived won’t be announced until sometime between April and June, stated the message.
