H&HS sergeant claims MCI West uarterly honors

6 Nov 2006 | Lance Cpl. Megan Angel Marine Corps Air Station Yuma

Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron Sgt. Daniel G. Walters, station postal clerk, was honored with the Marine Corps Installations West Noncommissioned Officer of the Quarter award on the parade deck here Nov. 6.

Col. William Liston, MCI West Deputy Commander, and MCI West sergeant major, Sgt. Maj. Wayne R. Bell, presented Walters with a Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal and an NCO sword.

“The sword is perfect symbol of the Marine NCO,” said Liston. “To win one is an astounding accomplishment.”

Marines put up on the boards for recognition such as NCO of the Quarter and Marine of the Quarter must be prepared to go up against several other Marines from all of MCI West.

“From a sergeant major’s perspective, it’s very apparent that our leadership is keeping our Marines prepared to be put up on these boards,” said Sgt. Maj. Christopher Hamel, H&HS sergeant major. “Not only are they efficient but they are also extremely confident.”
It’s not just the Marine concept that makes these Marines successful, said Hamel. The extra curricular activities, college education and volunteer work that they are involved in proves that they are always striving to be better as people and Marines. It is a also a great contribution to the community.

“I appreciate all the support from all the Marines,” said Walters, a Houston native. “My advice to them is to get goals and go after them. Don’t wait for anything to come to you. The best way to get what you want is to go out ant get it.”

This is the second Marine from H&HS to receive a NAM within the past three months. In August, Cpl. Emily Sample, H&HS legal clerk, took MCI West Marine of the Quarter.

“I’m proud to be back here to recognize another one of Yuma’s fine Marines,” said Sgt. Maj. Bell, MCI West sergeant major. “Keep doing what you are doing!”
